AwF is an organization of global volunteer aquaculture professionals who network; who are passionate about aquaculture and its ability to engage, train and feed the disadvantaged; and who create initiatives, projects and programs.

 Mission Statement

Aquaculture without Frontiers is a registered charity whose mission is to promote and support responsible and sustainable aquaculture to alleviate poverty and malnutrition and to enhance food security for disadvantaged people.

 Vision Statement

To become a catalyst for change as a means of improving the nutrition and health of people, to foster social and economic development, and to support sustainable aquaculture development.

  • To ensure direct action to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged people through aquaculture.
  • To collaborate with like-minded organisations to maximise opportunities.
  • To provide a platform for aquaculture professionals to come together and provide service to the poor.

 Our 3 Key Strategies 

1 – Transfer knowledge & technology that

  • supports basic aquaculture value chain development
  • shares best aquaculture practices through internship activities and via virtual web-based mentoring

2 – Develop and increase capacity that

  • promotes partnering, networking, collaborating and sharing of ideas to overcome challenges and create opportunities
  • establishes partnerships with organizations and groups with similar or complementary goals
  • integrates aquaculture projects with other food production & food security programs
  • recognizes the need to educate and support women and young people and foster the development of leaders
  • mentors local professionals and enhances knowledge exchange

3 Build and maintain a platform that

  • enables the organisation to work effectively and efficiently
  • enables the donation of time and money
  • raises the awareness of the role and benefits of aquaculture
  • carries out projects that are carefully monitored and assessed for impact and effectiveness in alleviating poverty and malnutrition

 How We Do This

We plan on building/creating Aquaculture Learning Centres (ALC’s), the Global Network of Schools/Students (GNS), and assist on Projects where we already engage and through those we will:

1 – Transfer knowledge & technology

 Support basic aquaculture value chain development

  • Create project guidelines and encourage projects that meet our guidelines
  • Develop, implement and maintain an application process which is simple, effective, timely and adheres to our guidelines
  • Develop, implement and maintain a project list detailing projects funded and not funded
  • Develop positive Case Studies relating to basic aquaculture value chain development

Share best aquaculture practices through internship activities and via virtual web-based mentoring

  • Develop, implement and maintain an e-newsletter
  • Create communication strategy through all media

Provide technical and managerial experience 

  • Create communication strategy through all media; a Technical Advisory Committee to do this work
  • Develop, implement and maintain a system which enables this to work smoothly

2 – Develop and increase capacity

Promote partnering, networking, collaborating and sharing of ideas to overcome challenges and create opportunities

  • Develop, implement and maintain a list of prospective partners, collaborators, etc
  • Create regular communication with this list
  • Convert as many prospective partners, collaborators, etc to established list

Establish partnerships with local organizations and groups with similar or complementary goals

  • Develop, implement and maintain database of MOU’s, Partners, Organisations
  • Create regular communication with this list
  • Develop protocols with each partnership to enable our priority goals to be achieved

Integrate aquaculture projects with other food production & food security programs

  • Develop, implement and maintain database of Government and other Voluntary or NGO Aid programs
  • Create regular communication with this list
  • Develop protocols with each member of this database to enable our priority goals to be achieved

Recognize the need to educate and support women and young people and foster the development of leaders

  • Create a program to educate young people and foster the development of leaders linking with internships
  • Develop Case Studies relating to educating young people
  • Develop positive Case Studies relating to roles of women and children
  • Create communication strategy through all media
  • Endeavour that projects have demonstrated benefits for women and/or children

Mentor local professionals and enhances knowledge exchange 

  • Develop, implement and maintain database of local professionals
  • Create list of essential information required
  • Build repository of essential information and maintain database of same (develop key information modules (eg videos) on established tested technologies or partner with others who can do this)

3 – Build and maintain a platform

Enable the organisation to work effectively and efficiently to achieve all key strategies

  • Manage the operations of a Charity Organisation in a professional manner
  • Develop, implement and maintain a Position Description for Executives, Patrons, Volunteers, Ambassadors, Members, Mentors, Committees (ExCom, TAC, etc) etc including Roles & Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement and maintain an Induction Program for all new people entering the organisation at any level
  • Adopt continuous improvement program to organisation reviewing 3-5 year Strategy, yearly operational plans, budgets and all projects/programs

Donation of time and money

  • Develop, implement and maintain a database of past, current and prospective donors (individuals, organisations)
  • Develop, implement and maintain a database of volunteers (those that give of time, expertise)
  • Develop, implement and maintain a strategic document and specific communications tools for specific target donor groups
  • Create a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding program (for ex., 1% for the Poor based on Patagonia model of 1% of gross sales) and Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) donation program (for ex., individual monthly donations from personal income)
  • Develop a range of advertisements
  • Develop a power point presentation and a short video to give at various events
  • Develop, implement and maintain a program of Executive Committee activities targeting funding opportunities
  • Particularly find ways to encourage all students to assist in all events, activities
  • Create short video’s to promote successes and to transfer knowledge and technology
  • Create communication strategy through all media including our own website
  • Seek grants and funding which would enable Strategic Plan to be met

Awareness of the role and benefits of aquaculture

  • Develop, implement and maintain a plan for volunteers to act as ambassadors
  • Develop words to explain why aquaculture, as opposed to pig farming or planting banana trees
  • Develop positive Case Studies relating to role and benefits of aquaculture
  • Create communication strategy through all media

Carry out projects that are carefully monitored and assessed for impact and effectiveness in alleviating poverty

  • Develop, implement and maintain a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to do this work
  • Develop, implement and maintain a Benefit Cost Analysis (BCA) for each project or program which will prove effectiveness (perhaps specific poverty impact assessments)
  • Develop, implement and maintain tools to enable us to measure our successes and learn from our failures programs
  • Ensure Case Studies, videos, reports, photographs and other such means are part of the finished project to enable communication, media, etc

Transparent and accountable

  • Develop, implement and maintain an approved accounts system
  • Develop, implement, maintain and publish an Annual Report
  • Develop, implement and maintain the Key Strategy document and have an annual meeting to discuss Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and adjust Strategy and KPI’s for following year
  • Be professional and timely in all things that we do and stick to agreed processes
  • Be proud of all our achievements and all the people engaged and promote everything that we do as widely as we can
  • Keep our website current, relevant and easy to navigate
  • Ensure that at all times we retain a global presence through all groups – endeavoring to communicate in as many languages as possible
  • Make sure that our supporters represents the sector, taking necessary steps to ensure awareness and interest in what we are doing

NOTE

Being a small organisation which relies heavily on volunteers it is understood that many of these areas are aspirations and whilst every effort will be made to achieve the stated goals we will give the responsibility to the Executive Director and Executive Committee to prioritise the actions and activities under the Strategic Plan.
