Travel Grant Selection Finalised

Category:Updates

Travel Grant Jeju logos 2Three well deserving female candidates are now planning their trip to Jeju as a result of this excellent competition but regrettably many other excellent applicants missed out.

The applications roared in and the judges completed their task. Their report states “We all remarked on the high standard of all applications making the contest extremely close and thank all those who entered as they made our task as Judges extremely difficult.”

The two students selected were Nantaporn Sutthi and Gladys Ludevese Pascual and the mature age person selected was Mya Zin Oo.

Nantaporn Sutthi is from Chang Mai, Thailand and is involved in Social and Environment Research at the university there, this will be the first time for her at a world aquaculture conference. Gladys is originally from Philippines but is currently working at the University of Ghent in the Laboratory of Aquaculture and Artemia Reference Centre. Mya Zin Oo works at Yangon University, Myanmar and is involved in research in reproductive biology of crustaceans, especially freshwater animals, but her main duty is teaching aquaculture to undergraduate students.

WAS-APC Board members Katherine Hawes, Jennifer Cobcroft, Maymyat Noelwin and Wayne O’Connor, said “This has encouraged new members to join and from our perspective, adds to the value of membership. Certainly members who communicated about the grants highlighted their pleasure that their membership fees were contributing to such a good cause.”

Aquaculture without Frontiers Women’s Network Secretariat, Virginia Mosk, said ‘We were pleased to engage and promote the opportunities for women in aquaculture. It was great to see the number that applied and to hear about the standard of their applications.”

The selected applicants will assist at the WAS-APC Booth at the Conference/Trade Show and will be part of a panel involved in the Women in Aquaculture & Fisheries session at WA2015 discussing experiences of women in the aquaculture/fisheries area.

The theme for World Aquaculture 2015 being held in Jeju 26-30 May is ‘Aquaculture for Healthy People, Planet and Profit’ and is very relevant for an area which has a strong aquaculture industry, a population which has a high seafood consumption and is home to a natural UNESCO World Heritage Site.
