Following a unanimous decision by the AwF Women’s Network Committee we are very pleased to announce that our inaugural ‘Woman of the Month’ for December 2014 is Dr. Jennifer Cobcroft BSc PhD, Research Fellow at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania.

Jenny surpasses all of the criteria relating to AwF processes of recognition of outstanding achievements which advance our goals and values so we have much pleasure in promoting Jenny as an outstanding individual and role model for aquaculture/seafood women for the time and dedication she has given for members of the community.

Jenny has also recently been recognised by her peers in the aquaculture sphere by being voted onto the World Aquaculture Society – Asian Pacific Chapter Board.

May Myat Noe Lwin recommended Jenny to the committee based on her commitment to share her knowledge and experience on a recent AwF assignment in Myanmar. Noe Noe said “I truly appreciated Jenny’s work in Myanmar and it had a great contribution for our industry. Although it was relatively short period of time, we achieved so much. I was really amazed how Jenny could adapt so easily with our poor living condition, walking bare foot to the ponds under the heavy rain when we visited our demo farms in Okhan, travelling in different modes of transport – from motor bikes to pick-up trucks on bumpy roads without any flinching from the jobs at hand. But most important of all, I admired Jenny’s endless and tireless effort to help our industry passing on her knowledge and experience. It was a real wake-up call for many of the people in Myanmar, highlighting that others do care about us and that it is time for change. AwF definitely made a huge positive impact on our industry because of Jenny’s efforts.”

Jenny was on leave without pay, and looked after her own transport and arrangements which also showed her dedication to the activity which has really helped set the scene for more activities in the region. Contributions toward travel were received from The Australian Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (Professional Development Award), and the US Soybean Export Council. Additionally Jenny, fresh from her return was also on hand at the recent AwF Awareness event held at Huon Valley Trade Training Centre to give the audience a presentation on her experiences in Myanmar and her report can be seen at https://www.aquaculturewithoutfrontiers.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/AwF_Article_Cobcroft_Myanmar.pdf
